France, 1833. Very Good+. NOTEBOOK OF COLLECTED FRENCH VERSE. Titled: "Cahier de Romances, Chansons, Ariettes et autres morceaux choises" [par] Felicité Delcroix and continued by Liévin Delcroix under the date “16 Janvier 1833.” France: c. 1800-1833. Manuscript on paper in French, written in brown ink in at least three hands, contemporary pagination to 126. Numbered are 119 songs in verse composed of quatrains and couplets, also known as “chansons” or “parlour songs” all titled on table at rear leaves. Some notable pieces include: L’Hirondelle [by Alphonse Lamartine]; Le point du jour à nos bosquets [by Nicolas-Marie Dalayrac]; Bonne Éspérance [by Frederic Berat] (Popular 19th century French National Song); and Mon Rocher de Saint Malo [by Loisa Puget] and several more, likely original (possibly by Delcroix) or other unpublished and unknown works. Two “chansons” are with musical notation, all pieces include lyrics in themes of hope, motherhood, travel, nature, unrequited love and other popular sentiments. Laid-in are six loose manuscript notes and poems contemporary to the manuscript, one autograph note 1pp., titled “La France Industrieuse” discussing industrial production in some important French cities; (manuscript somewhat browned, occasional stains; lacking covers, final index leaf. Full and varied manuscript collection of popular French lyric dating from the mid-19th century with some interesting loose ephemera.
