About This Item
Lipsiae: Sumtibus Caspari Fritsch. GOOD book, tight no loose pages. Backstrip (in 3 pieces) laid in. 1775. Hardcover. GOOD book. 8"x5". xviii,592,xlvi,(6),(78 page index),(3)pp. "Lives of the Twelve Caesars". Engraved frontis, tp printer mark . Half brown morocco, vellum boards. Sold for the text block only. Bockstrip is in pieces. MISSING first & last blank eps. BUT: a NEAR FINE text block. No loose pages or cracked signatures. All three text block edges tinted the same shade of light red. Text with a bit of type offset but no aging, foxing, marginalia, etc. Furthur, book tends to stay closed when stood on its spine, a sign of having been read with care, if at all. Mildly interesting gift note dated 1800. In Latinized German, and both my Latin and German is zero, but it seems to a note presenting this book to a promising recent graduate of a Bergensis school. It is presented by C[hristian] F[riedrich] Schewe and [Johannn Gottfried] Gurlitt to Georg Ludwig Fredrich Hunrich. Schewe & Gurlitt were academics. Hunrich seems to have fullfilled his promise as he in 1855 wrote a book on marriage & morals which is presently available POD. Most of the info on these three, that I can find, is in German. .
