Stapled pamphlet format that was published six times a year October through March and made available to elementary and junior high schools. Page edges and spine very slightly age-tanned. Otherwise the aoppearance of an unread book. First story is a five page biorgraphy of Dr. David Starr Jordan, the first presand of Leland Stanford Junior University where he remained for 40 years. Thousands and thousands of students who passed through Stanford in those years cherish him as a beloved teacher. His office and his home were always open and he was never too busy to share his great learning and common sense. But he thought of himself as a naturalist. He often said he had lived three lives: First as a naturalist and explorer, second as a teacher, and third a minor prophet of democracy. Illustrated throughout with black and white photographs. Contents: Beloved Teacher, Fords and Ferries of Early California, Raisins of the Sun, Big Trees in California History, and the Editor's Sluice Box. The woodcut cover drawing is titled Winter Sports.
