About This Item

Los Angeles, California, U.S.A.: Self-published, 1936. First Edition First Printing . Spiral-bound Hardcover. Near Fine. Comprehensive guide to 54 flowering plants that are native to California. Offered for the Nature Lover, the author's introduction asserts that "Nature's Garden is ours to protect, & an acquaintance should make us eager to preserve it for those who are to know it in the coming years..a knowledge of our native flowers will do more for conservation than will laws that prohibit the gathering of them." Harris (1873-1956) was an Iowan turned California landscape artist who specialized in botanical studies. Self-published from her home in Los Angeles, this oblong spiral-wire bound 32 mo (7.5" x 5") has green cloth-covered boards stamped in gilt lettering & butterfly image &1938 date to front cover. Printed on recto only, each page has a lithographed color image, plant name in English & Latin, family affiliation, physical description, & information on where in nature to find it. Author has lined through her street address on first page & hand-written in new address; book is otherwise unmarked. OCLC shows 24 copies worldwide in 3 editions, but only 10 copies of this self-published version.
