About This Item
Santa Barbara, California: Lawton and Alfred Kennedy, for the author, 1969. First Edition. Hardcover. As New. 8vo 8" - 9" tall. A Fine condition copy from the personal library of the owner of California Collectible Books, in Martinez, California, Lloyd Mason. Bound in an octavo hardcover format, bright red cloth covers with a blind-stamped illustration to front cover, bright and distinctive gilt lettering to spine, deckled fore-edge, and plentiful illustrations in black-and-white. This work of social history recounts the period in the 1880s when lawless bands of vigilantes marauded throughout the State of Indiana and then spread to adjacent and non-contiguous states, including, eventually, to California, akin to the ways in which the Knights of the Golden Circle spread terror prior to the Civil War. As the "White Caps" spread they spread fear and terror and twisted senses of morality. The so-called "Lake County incident" involved these Ku Klux KIan-like vigilante White Capmen, all white males who took it upon themselves to enforce what they took to be shared community standards, appropriate behavior and traditional rights. It was racist, sexist, and bigoted to the core. Frontis matter + 132 pp.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes, and for sets.
