First US edition of the author's second Victorian mystery, which introduces Inspector Pitt and his wife, Charlotte. very good+ in a very good+ dust jacket. Barely perceptible price erasure on front endpaper; front board has a few spots of soiling. The jacket spine is sun faded from an orangeish color to yellow, and the jacket has just a hint of edgewear. A tight, square copy with no names or other markings in the book, and the $10.00 price on the front flap.
