About This Item

Washington DC: US Government, 1926. Framed under glass. Very Good +. One leaf affixed with the Seal of the Department of Justice. Exposed frame area measures 15.5" x 11.5". Signed by the President of the United States of America, and the United States Attorney General, appointing Albert White as Marshal in the Territory of Alaska. Some slight spotting to document. Presented in a contemporary oak frame, with light scratches and slight chipping consistent with age. Signed in full in ink by Calvin Coolidge and US Attorney General John G. Sargent. By the 1850s, most presidential signatures were by proxy, with a secretary or clerk signing official documents with the authority of the president. That said, this document's signature of Coolidge corresponds with his pre-presidential signature, showing the same flourishes on his letters "C" and "G," for instance, thus suggesting Coolidge himself signed the appointment.

At the time Albert White was appointed marshal in the Territory of Alaska, 1926, the region was really more akin to the frontier West, given Alaska's belated exploration and settlement. That is, crime associated with rugged pioneerism was often, at that late date, met with frontier justice. Exacerbating matters, prohibition, was still in effect. Proximity to Canada led to rampant liquor smuggling across the border to the Territory of Alaska. Such were the conditions faced by Marshal White.
