London: F. Collins for A. Smalle, 1695. First Edition. Hardcover (Full Leather). Very Good Condition. Full contemporary calf worn will old repairs, corners rounded, neatly rebacked in calf with added endpapers. The first edition of Gibson's translation - the original Latin edition first appeared in 1586 ("If Camden was not the first English historian. topographer and antiquarian, he was certainly the first to relate the three studies...It was the revolutionary subject matter, and its even more revolutionary treatment of the subject, which made it at once the vehicle and the model for research in all three subjects for the next two hundred and fifty years." PMM 101). With a frontis portrait, 50 maps, and 9 plates as well as in text illustration of inscriptions, coins, and monuments (including two attractive engravings of Stonehenge). A few of the maps with small tears at the center fold, a few starting to split at the bottom near the center, one folding map lacking a portion of the bottom (blank) margin, another folding map with a small tear at the center fold and an old paper repair to the verso - most of the maps clean and unmarked. Scattered minor marginal tears to text pages, not touching any text, scattered minor stains - a clean and very good copy overall. (xxxiv)pp, 1116 columns, (44)pp. Size: Folio.
