About This Item
1884. Travel back in time to the 1880s as Civil War veterans swap stories around a campfire in this NEW 6" x 8 1/4" soft cover book with 18 illustrations. This 242-page book is a newly type-set, lightly edited, limited edition reprint of a fascinating 1884 book titled Campfire Chats of the Civil War by Washington Davis. We are currently offering it exclusively on and through our website. This new edition is entitled: Lost Episodes of the Civil War The original book was published in Mansfield, Ohio, but most prominently mentioned are Illinois soldiers. Also included are tales by veterans from Iowa, New York, Indiana, Pennsylvania and other states. It vividly portrays the day to day life of the Civil War soldier, while chronicling many personal incidents. Sit down to a soldier's diet of "desecrated vegetables," "slap-Jacks" and "hard tack and S.B." Some of the many subjects touched upon include: The Camp of Instruction Sutlers and Quartermasters / Foraging Prison Life & Escape Attempts Army Mules & Mule Drivers Freak Accidents / Premonitions Copperheads & Renegades Corduroy Roads & Pontoon Bridges Skirmish Lines, Fortifications & Unexpected Engagements Chaplains & Revivals Guard Duty / Unofficial Truces Practical Jokes / Drummer Boys / Spooning Executions & Deserters / Marching & Racing Other tales are not easily catagorized: like the future president who almost had his arm amputated; the fellow who wrote his girlfriend a 500+ page letter after she complained that his letters were too short; the exciting first hand account of the capture of the famous Rebel John Morgan; and -- one of my personal favorites -- the war's only "Unchronicled Battle." . Limited Edition Reprint Leavenworth. Soft Cover. New/No Jacket. 8.5" x 11". Private Press.
