About This Item
Montreal: Antiquarian and Numismatic Society of Montreal, 1910. Published in Antiquarian and Numismatic Society of Montreal. THE CANADIAN ANTIQUARIAN AND NUMISMATIC JOURNAL. THIRD SERIES, VOL. VII, NO. 4. (1910) 8vo, original printed card covers. Title page printed in red and black. Near fine. Includes McLachlan's important article on the earliest paper money of Canada. CNB, page 56: "a documented account of card money in Canada, that addresses rival claims to such an innovation, and amends Ernest Zay's story of this unusual currency. McLachlan not only adds precision to the history of card money, he has also examined post-mortem, estate inventories in the notarial archives, which list card money among the assets. Other scholars did not pursue this fruitful line of enquiry for another sixty-five years. McLachlan details Canada's role in introducing a new medium of exchange (altered playing-cards used as paper currency during the French Regime) with a superior power for economic expansion, thereby placing coins in a secondary position as generators of economic growth.".
