New York: Willilams, Belasco and Meyers, 1930. Hardcover. Very Good with no dust jacket/No Dustjacket. Illustrated by Blaine, Mahlon. Pages clean except for a small bookplate on the front endpaper and a touch of age-toning throughout; binding is secure, though with net showing between some signatures; full black cloth binding bears a slight fold along the spine, some dust staining in the gutters, spots of finish loss along the left front and at the lower rear, and some shelfwear at corners and spine ends, and the gilt on the front cover is mildly dimmed, but gilt titles and illustration at front and spine remain striking, the book overall sound.
Synopsis
Candide, ou l'Optimisme (in French) is a French satire written in 1759 by Voltaire, a philosopher of the Age of Enlightenment. The novella has been widely translated, with English versions titled Candide: or, All for the Best (1759); Candide: or, The Optimist (1762); and Candide: or, Optimism (1947). It begins with a young man, Candide, who is living a sheltered life in an Edenic paradise and being indoctrinated with Leibnizian optimism (or simply optimism) by his mentor, Pangloss.
