First edition, 2 volumes in 1, 8vo, 2 folding maps, 2 lithograph plates; spine extremities chipped, else a good, reasonably sound copy in a presumed later issue binding (the book was also issued in 2 volumes, green cloth) of original blue cloth, gilt decorations on spine and upper cover, a.e.g. A British scientist's geological reconnaissance through the Great Lakes and upper Mississippi valley in 1835-37. Featherstonhaugh began his journey in Washington, D.C. and traveled via Pittsburgh and Cleveland before visiting Detroit, and travelling by canoe on Lakes Huron and Michigan to Mackinac and Green Bay, thence via the Fox and Mississippi Rivers to Saint Anthony and Fort Snelling, where Featherstonhaugh's party ascended the Minnesota River as far as Lake Traverse on the Dakota border, and back again via Lake Pepin, Galena, and Saint Louis.
