Gallup Bibliography Pound, 7b-8b Only about 140 copies issued in this form.
Canzone and Ripostes had been first issued by Elkin Matthews in July 1911 and Stephen Swift in October 1912 respectively. This joint reissue of "not more than 500 copies ... consists of the first edition sheets of the two books .. with new half-title and title-leaf for the volume .. inserted at the front ... The two leaves of advertisements, which formed pages [53-56] in the first issue have been excised and inserted at the end of the volume. The Ripostes sheets have the original half-title and title-leaf excised and a new half-title leaf pasted in, with on its verso, in lieu of the original list of Ezra Pound's books, the motto from the verso of the original title-leaf .... Of the matter [in these new leaves] actually reprinted, 500 copies were prepared by the Chiswick Press. The rare occurrence of the composite volume in comparison with its separate components indicates that fewer than the intended number were issued" [Gallup].
Stephen Swift "had agreed to publish Pound's future books, giving him £100 per year in advance royalties. ... The first book to appear under this agreement was the English edition of the Sonnets and Ballate of Guido Cavalcanti .. in May 1912 and the second was Ripostes on October. But Ripostes had been out only a few weeks when Ezra Pound write to his parents .. 'Swift is busted' ... Elkin Mathews agreed to take over [from the liquidator] all bound copies and sheets of Ripostes" [Gallup].
Nelson's work in the publisher's archives showed that a maximum of 140 copies could have been issued in this form (vide p. 148).
