About This Item
(London: London Magazine Editions, 1974). Squarish 8vo; original black boards; laminated dustwrapper; pp. 50. Dustwrapper sunned on spine, with light foxing to reverse. Very good condition. First book by this important South African writer. About his poetry, Christopher Hope writes: "My work is an attempt to gauge the stress under which the English-speaking White South African exists. For all his claim to belong to Africa, he is not a part of it. ... He is under pressure. So much so that he has long since ceased to be a part of the world. Rather he sees the world as going on alongside him. He is defensive, fearing displacement, not realising that he is already displaced. As I see it, my poems reflect the struggle of one English-speaking White South African to become part of the world again." .
