About This Item

Madrid: Socieded de Autores Espanoles. Madrid, Socieded de Autores Espanoles, n.d. [book 1912-1913]. Manuscript. Unbound. An interesting collection comprising a typescript in two parts (near fine) and two books in wraps (good). The manuscript is a translation to English of Milla and Roura's stage performance of Raffles' Capture. The play appears to be in two parts, the first The Triumph of Sherlock Holmes, first performed in 1908 in Barcelona. The second part, Nobody More Powerful Than Sherlock Holmes was first performed in Barcelona in 1909. The present offering includes copies of (first editions?) both plays, published in 1912 and 1913 in Madrid. Also included is a manuscript translation of the two parts by Vivien M Flood, about whom I can find very little. Presumably the play was never published given the lack of records on WorldCat. There's no date for the translation, though given that there's tippex present one must assume it be post 1960 or thereabouts. My assumption would be that the Raffles to whom the scripts refer is A.J. Raffles, the Sherlock counterpoint created by E.W. Hornung, Conan Doyle's brother-in-law, though I'm only speculating as I can't find a reference to that specifically. That said, Raffles takes the pseudonym Lapin in the second play, I guess an homage to Lupin. Either way, a fun pastiche. Condition of the manuscript is near fine (89pp and 100pp), with just a bit of creasing. Corrections are few. The books are a little more worn, particularly to the spine. [9327, Hyraxia Books]. n.d. [book 1912-1913] . Near Fine. Unbound. Manuscript. 1912.
