[Iowa City]: The Stone Wall Press / The Seamark Press, 1972. Edition limited to 150 copies, 8vo, pp. 61, [3]; original blue cloth, printed paper label on spine; fine. From the library of Kim Merker. Berger, Printing & the Mind of Merker, 50: "Printed as a joint publication with Kay Amert and Howard Zimmon of the Seamark Press." This is "the one and only book issued jointly by the Seamark Press and Kim Merker's Stonewall Press. Merker was some 15 years older than Kay and had come to Iowa to study with Harry Duncan about a decade earlier than she. He was also then, like Kay, a junior member of the faculty of the University of Iowa, where he too would stay for the rest of his life - but Kay and Kim were of radically different temperaments and grew steadily further apart. In later years, the University's Center for the Book, directed by Merker, and the Type Lab, directed by Kay, maintained efficient, polite, but rather chilly professional relations, while students moved freely and easily between them"… Read More

"The fourth Seamark book (Cargo, 1972) is set in Emerson, a type Kay would continue to use. This, you could say, is the first sign of her mature style. But Cargo represents yet another experiment that Kay would not repeat: it is the one and only book issued jointly by the Seamark Press and Kim MerkerÕs Stonewall Press. Merker was some 15 years older than Kay and had come to Iowa to study with Harry Duncan about a decade earlier than she. He was also then, like Kay, a junior member of the faculty of the University of Iowa, where he too would stay for the rest of his life Ð but Kay and Kim were of radically different temperaments and grew steadily further apart. Description:
Iowa City, IA: The Stonewall Press - The Seamark Press, 1972. First Edition. Very good in blue cloth with paper label spine.. First Edition being a limited edition of only 250 copies. This edition of Nelson's collection of poems was printed on a handpress, on handmade Tovil paper, set in Emerson fine, by noted fine press printers Kay Amert, Howard Zimmon and K.K. Merker. Cargo is the fourth book published by Seamark, however, it is the only book issued jointly by the Seamark Press and Kim Merker's Stonewall Press. Upon Merker's passing in 2013, his New York Times obituary stated that "for four decades, using presses he operated with his own inky hands, Mr. Merker was a designer, typesetter and printer of some of the most beautiful books made in America in the late 20th century." An important, and the only joint, publication of two of among the finest presses of the 20th century.
