About This Item

New York: John W. Lovell Company. Reissue. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket. Reissue. U.S. Secretary of State Robert Lansing's copy, with his bookplate on front endpaper of each volume (these were purchased from a family library in Henderson Harbor, NY, near his birthplace in Watertown, which included many other works owned by him). Spines faded, top edges lightly foxed. Complete in ten volumes. Burgundy cloth, gilt titles and rules. Despite stating 'Carlyle's Complete Works, Illustrated' on the title page of each volume, this edition includes no illustrations (the title page was likely reused from an earlier edition). A complete collection of the works of Thomas Carlyle, most well-known for Sartor Resartus and his history of the French Revolution (which inspired Dickens to write a Tale of Two Cities). Includes: Sartor Resartus: The Life and Opinions of Herr Teufelsdrockh; Heroes and Hero Worship; The French Revolution: A History; History of Friedrich II. of Prussia, Called Frederick the Great I, II, III, IV; Past and Present, The Portraits of John Knox, Miscellanies; Critical and Miscellaneous Essays, Collected and Republished, I, II; Oliver Cromwell's Letters and Speeches, with Elucidations, I, II; The Life of Friedrich Schiller, Comprehending an Examination of His Works; Index.
