United States: Mathew Brady, et al., 1861. CIVIL WAR; GRANT, Ulysses S.. Carte-de-Visite Album of 30 Union Civil War Generals, Including Ulysses S. Grant

[CIVIL WAR]. [GRANT, Ulysses S.]. [Carte-de-Visite Album of 30 Union Civil War Generals. United States: Mathew Brady, et al., n.d.c.a. 1861-1865].

Small octavo album containing 30 individual carte-de-visites of Union generals in the Civil War. (5 3/4 x 4 1/2 inches; 140 x 110 mm). Each mounted within a decorative stiff card frame with gilt border. With 15 leaves and each leaf has a slot for two photographs. Most photos with a publisher's imprint on the back and the name of the general also penciled on the back. Album is contemporary embossed Morocco with two brass clasps. One clasp is broken. Gilt dentelles. Some pages have been reattached at margin, but all are present. Some chipping and wear to head and tale of the spine, but overall very good. A very nice assemblage of vintage photographs of officers from the Union.

The carte-de-visites are as follows, with a note on their publisher and condition (if other than very good):

1. Winfield Scott (D. Appleton). 2. George McClellan (Charles Taber) 3. Ambrose Burnside (Appleton). 4. Michael Corcoran (E. Anthony?). 5. Silas Casey (Charles D. Fredricks). 6. Nathaniel Banks (Appleton). Slightly faded.

7. Ulysses S. Grant (E. Anthony). 8. Henry Halleck (Appleton). 9. Ethan A. Hitchcock (Appleton). 10. Nathaniel Lyon (Appleton). 11. John Pope (E. Anthony from Brady's National Portrait Gallery).

12. Franz Siegel (Appleton) Faded. 13. Robert Anderson (Appleton). Bottom of mount chipped.

14. John Wool (Appleton). 15. William Sprague (Charles D. Fredricks). 16. Group photo of 12 generals (Unknown maker). Faded.

17. Max Weber (Appleton). 18. Frederick W. Lander (Appleton). Lightly faded. 19. Jesse L. Reno (Unknown maker). 20. James Shields (Appleton). 21. Description:
[Np: The Photographer, ca. 1963].. Two original glossy double-weight gelatin silver prints from negatives, 11 x 14" (inclusive of margins). Captioned in pencil on verso. About fine. Original prints of two of the most memorable of the sequence of superb photographs taken by Yousuf Karsh on location in South Africa during the filming of the 1964 Diamond Films production, ZULU, directed by Cy Endfield. Karsh's invitation to join the production and photograph the cast and locale resulted in a sequence of photographs of a very high order. The present images are an extraordinary pair of photographs, one from a near face-on p.o.v., the other from right profile, of a large group of Zulu tribesmen, in warrior regalia, seated and watching a motion picture (in the first of the images the 16mm projector is visible in the background). The expressions of wonder and amusement are matchless. The pencil caption on the verso reads of the first reads: "The Zulus watched a western movie at dusk outdoors in the… Read More

Description:
[San Francisco]: [Probably Taber Photo], 1880. Ephemera. Near fine. An imperial plate (8-1/2 by 12-1/2 inches) image "made on the path leading from Hutchings's Upper House hotel to his residence a few hundred yards north of the hotel, north of present-day Sentinel Bridge," Naef and Hult-Lewis, p. 90. Watkins took this image between 1878 and 1881. It may have been printed by Isaiah Taber, after Taber took over Watkins's bankrupt photo studio. However, it does not have the Taber imprint but the mount matches another Yosemite image with Taber's logo in the negative. This view is very similar to one of Watkins's mammoth-plate images (Naef and Hult-Lewis, Carleton Watkins: The Complete Mammoth Photographs, no. 200) and was almost certainly taken at the same time. In addition to the albumen print offered here, another example of this imperial plate image is in the Yosemite Museum, on a larger mount. While it is generally known that Watkins regularly took his 18-by-22-inch mammoth glass-plate camera and… Read More

Description:
Against a stark horizon in a harsh climate, settlers in Nebraska everywhere erected monuments to their optimism. The buildings pictured in Dreams in Dry Places are not just famous landmarks like the State Capitol but also humble farmhouses, barns, grain elevators, courthouses, banks, churches, stores, and theaters. They represent every kind of architecture to be found in Nebraska--folk, high-style, commercial, residential, pioneer, and modern; the unexpected and the familiar, the poetic and the prosaic, good and bad. Caught by Roger Bruhn's camera, these structures always suggest the spiritual resources of their builders and inhabitants, who struggled for a livelihood on the Great Plains.Dreams in Dry Places has an architecture of its own, beginning and ending with images of the natural landscape and in between revealing unexpected continuities among disparate structures and settings, juxtapositions of forms, and the vanities and vagaries of architectural style. Description:
1875. Single plate (22.9 x14.8cm) extracted from an early issue of Irving's The Theatre magazine, comprising tipped-in Woodburytype photograph (14.6 x 9.6cm) of Terry seated in her costume for the Merchant of Venice, with "The Theatre, No. 1, Third Series. Woodburytype" printed directly underneath. Terry sits aslant to her right, looking to her left, with her left hand raised and index finger pointing up, two books piled in the background tightly framing the back of her hand. With (mis)quotation from Act 4, Scene 1 in facsimile of Terry's flamboyant hand underneath: ""Come Merchant have you anything to say"?/ Portia/ Ellen Terry:". Triangle of white to bottom right corner of photograph, presumably from glitch in its reproduction, minute patch of wear to Terry's right cheek, page mount a little soiled, toned and wrinkled. Still, a pleasingly sharp and rich photograph for its age, indeed, as one would expect from the expensive Woodburytype process. Very good The University of Washington Libraries… Read More
