About This Item

La Haye [i.e., London], 1779. [4],71pp. Modern half red morocco and marbled boards, spine gilt. Internally clean. Very good plus. Stated fifth edition, revised and corrected, though actually the second edition, according to Adams. It is identical to the first edition - including the edition statement - excepting that the titlepage is printed in all black rather than the black and red which distinguishes the first edition. Political satire on the Franco-American alliance during the American Revolution, which purports to be the contents of a French Ministerial dispatch box, including supposed letters from Franklin, false accounts, etc. This edition not noted in ESTC; Adams locates four copies. AMERICAN CONTROVERSY 79-107b. SABIN 95793
