This book brings together the author's essays on social stratification in India, written between 1964 and 1966 and concerned primarily with problems of status and power; it discusses the changing positions of the Harijans and Adivasis, the middle classes, and certain sections of the Indian elite; the author was a sociologist at the University of Delhi (black cloth with gold lettering, pages slightly tanned, previous owner's name on front endpaper; brown & tan dust jacket is shelfworn with small edge tears and chips at ends of spine and folds, otherwise intact)
