Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1899. Revised Edition. Cloth. Near fine. The Revised Edition of Castilian Days, signed by John Hay.. Octavo, v, [3], 414pp. Green cloth, title stamped in gilt on spine. Top edge gilt. Touch of rubbing to cloth, solid text block. Newspaper clipping affixed to front endpaper. The first trade edition of Castilian Days appeared in 1871, published by the James R. Osgood and Company of Boston. This Revised Edition was first appeared in 1890, with a revised preface by Hay (BAL 7770). This copy is signed by John Hay on the front free endpaper. John Hay (1838-1905) served as the private secretary to President Abraham Lincoln until 1865. Along with John Nicolay, Hay would author a 10-Volume biography of President Lincoln called Abraham Lincoln: A History. During the McKinley Administration, Hay returned to government as the United States ambassador to the United Kingdom, and later served as Secretary of State.
