London: Arthur Hall, Virtue & Co. Good. 1849. First Edition. Hardcover. xii, 480 pages; Contents clean and secure in contemporary binding of brown half leather over green cloth. Hinges very tender, leather worn at extremeties, large chip at base of spine (1"). Frontispiece engraving and 6 additional full page engraved plates with linen backing, many engravings (some full-page), plus decorated initial letters at beginning of each chapter. All plates and illustrations listed in the index are present, a couple have some spots of foxing, including the manuscript "Facsimile of Queen Elizabeth's Letter to the Earl of Shrewsbury" and "Allegorical Letter, Arms of Linlithgow." Former owner's signature in ink on ffep -- Peter Hagner; a couple old pencil notes on rear endpaper. During her brief reign, Mary found comfort in a number of Scottish castles and palaces, some even as a prisoner. Linlithgow Palace. Blackness Castle. Stirling Castle. Palace of Holyrood. Falkland Palace. Edinburgh Castle. Craigmillar Castle. A fascinating historical volume with many, many illustrations. .
