About This Item

Dr. Seuss Cat in the Hat FIRST EDITION 3rd Printing (glossy, 195/195) VG+ w/ VG DJ

Dr. Seuss (Theodor Geisel): The Cat in the Hat: For Beginning Readers, Random House: 61 pp, 9 x 6 1/2" = 230 x 165 mm (8vo), pictorial front and end pages. With dust jacket in VG condition (see below).

This is the third issue of the first edition, as shown by the 195/195 on the front flap of the dust jacket, the glossy cover, and no mention of the "Beginner Books" series on the rear panel.

This is a widely collected and much sought-after book, especially its first editions. Do your homework; there are a number of references:

Copies of the first issue/impression of the book (matte cover, 200/200) in decent condition are priced at several $ thousand. The 2nd impression is as rare as the first. This is an excellent example of the 3rd impression and a (mostly) affordable choice for first edition collecting, investment, or a bespoke gift.

Condition is a solid Very Good (+). Gently bumped corners and light edge wear, noticeable mainly at base of the spine. A pencil-size impression across top of front and rear cover boards. Interior pages are clean and bright with only one visible (light) fingerprint. Dust jacket is also Very Good and fully intact, with light wear to creases and top edges and a couple of light wear spots to front (see photo). We disclose all issues, but hard to come up with much for this outstanding book.

  • About the author: Theodor Seuss Geisel (1904-1991) was an American children's author and cartoonist. Geisel adopted the name "Dr. Seuss" as an undergraduate at Dartmouth College and as a graduate student at Lincoln College, Oxford. He is known for his work writing and illustrating more than 60 books under the pen name Dr. Seuss. His work includes many of the most popular children's books of all time, selling over 600 million copies and being translated into more than 20 languages by the time of his death. His 44 children's books have received many honors, including the Pulitzer, the Peabody, 3 Academy Awards and 2 Emmys, but The Cat in the Hat was an immediate literary and educational success and defined his career. Published in 15 languages it has been the source for TV specials, a musical, several films and a variety of games and toys. (After Wikipedia)
  • About the book: Dr. Seuss was challenged by Houghton Mifflin's Education Division director, William Ellsworth Spaulding, to create a book for young children using the 225 essential words for beginning readers, a book they would not want to put down. Seuss used 223 of the words from the list, plus 13 others. Seuss tricked kids into enjoying learning with his destructive and charismatic house guest. Inspired in part by Krazy Kat and Felix the Cat, but with a wily mind all his own, the Cat in the Hat's humor and naughtiness are engaged in the noble cause of literacy. "Parents," notes biographer Brian Jay Jones, "were more than happy to join Dr. Seuss as fellow revolutionaries. Even if parents didn't necessarily understand the pedagogy, it was easy to see the difference between the staid Dick and Jane and the rambunctious Cat in the Hat: kids wanted to read about the antics of the cat, just as Geisel had hoped."

Synopsis

The Cat in the Hat is a children's book written and illustrated by Theodor Geisel under the pen name Dr. Seuss and first published in 1957.  The story centers on a tall anthropomorphic cat who wears a red and white-striped hat and a red bow tie. The Cat shows up at the house of Sally and her brother on a rainy day while they are home alone. Despite the repeated objections of the children's fish, the Cat shows the children a few of his tricks in an attempt to entertain them. In the process, he and his companions, Thing One and Thing Two, wreck the house. The children and the fish become more and more alarmed until the Cat produces a machine that he uses to clean everything up and disappears just before the children's mother comes home. The Cat and the Hat  inaugerated the Beginner Books Series, promoting both the Dr. Seuss name and the cause of elementary literacy in the United States.
