About This Item

North Field, Oakland Airport: Aviazta. Very Good with no dust jacket. [1968?]. Softcover. Catalog of supplies for (small) planes and their pilots. Offers books and other training materials, navigation devices, chronographs, communicati ons and navigation "computers" and other related equipment, batteries, brake parts, spark plugs, tires and more, All items priced, includes bound in postal reply cards. Stiff yellow wraps, stapled. Title from cover. Date from a Rebat batteries page.; 5-1/2" x 8-1/4"; Nothing about this business for sale in the book trade, nothing in institutions (by OCLC search). A web search for information finds only a handful of classified ads in the Oakland Tribune during October 1971 seeking a Saleslady for Plane and Piolet (sic) Supplies. There is no telephone number; the order forms seek credit card payment with sales tax without provision for checks and without shipping charges. There is only a PO box number and no physical address beyond North Field. We suspect they were not long in business under this name. The catalog also notes a copyright to Sabri Aborashid [1931-1986]. Aborashid was born in Jordan and came to the US in the 1950s to study aeronautical science. He founded two other businesses Oakland Aviation and Flightways Air Academy. [An East Bay Times article provides some information and offers an interesting story about his son finding two Oakland Sheriff's Department badges.] WHAT'S IN A NAME? In an effort to determine the origin of the name, we attempted to translate the title word. Google suggested Basque and that it meant "fast". Other language also offered suggestions: Azerbaijani "in aviation", Turkmen "in the air", Uzbek "by air", Kyrgyz "on the air", Ukranian "aviation".; Light cover soiling, lightly rusted staples, a faint hint of mustiness, little wear. .
