F. Haes, London, "edition de luxe", 1888. Cream buckram, top edge gilt, others uncut, leather spine-label, 4to, 30 cm,. xxvi, 214 pp, 28 plates, ills, , plans. An important catalogue of an exhibition of Jewish Art, which originally set out to represent the history of Jews in England, but instead became a comprehensive exhibition on Jewish history and life through art and antiquities. From the introduction: "It was intended that the Catalogue should contain a list of all the objects which illustrate Anglo- Jewish History or Jewish Ecclesiastical Art in this country, and considering the shortness of time at the disposal of the compilers, the aim has been most creditably accomplished, and the Catalogue will remain of permanent value for the historical student and for all interested in the Jews of England. The Catalogue in itself forms no unimportant contribution towards the ends which the Exhibition was intended to promote." C. Roth, in the Introduction to the Catalogue of the Jewish Museum London (1974) wrote of the 1888 catalogue "(The) elaborate catalogue is even today one of the most desirable works in this field." From the title page verso: "The negatives were taken by Mr. Frank Haes ... on the Eastman negative paper in McKellan's roller slide; the prints have been printed in collotype by the Autotype Company, and are the first from such negatives which have been published in England". Copy number 81 of an unspecified limitation. Inscription in Greek and signature of Hugh L. Courts on front free endpaper. One leaf (pp xv-xvi) detached and frayed at fore-edge, covers rubbed and soiled, spine worn at foot, some light spotting and yellowing and minor marks to contents, otherwise Good.
