About This Item
London: Richards Watts, 1823. List of manuscripts extant in the various libraries, with brief excerpts in Ethiopic, translations and commentary. The appendix contains four versions of Mark 9 in Ethiopic, Amharic (by Abu Rumi), Tigré, & Amharic (the latter two in Roman characters by Pearce); and commentaries on the translation from Ethiopic. The full title is "A Catalogue of the Ethiopic Biblical Manuscripts in the Royal Library of Paris and in the Library of the British and Foreign Bible Society; also Some Account of Those in the Vatican Library at Rome with Remarks and Extracts. To Which are added, Specimens of Versions of the New Testament into the Modern Languages of Abyssinia: and a Grammatical Analysis of a Chapter in the Amharic Dialect: with Facsimiles of an Ethiopic and an Ahmaric Manuscript." Indeed. "Cut off from intercourse with Christian nations, and surrounded by Mahomedens and Pagans on every side, the Church of Abyssinia has stood for centuries alone, an oasis in the moral desert." Recently rebound in full grey cloth, black spine label. Half-title page smudged, plates water-stained, slight foxing in text. A few pages are torn from being opened sloppily, but the text is good, on untrimmed pages with large margins. 84 pages + errata page, appendices, 2 manuscript facsimile plates in red and black, one folding. . First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket. 9" by 11¼".
