About This Item

Her Majesty's Stationery Office, London, first editions, 1970. 2 vols, cloth, 4to,. xiii, 502 + 503 - 977 pp,8 plates. 1,463 entries in Part One, over 15,000 names indexed n Part Two. This second volume (in 2 parts) of the superb bibliographical catalogue of the famous library of the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, London. From a contemporary review: "The first volume [ =part] contains 191 entries for works of collective biography; these have in many cases notes as to the subjects of individual chapters, and these names all appear in the index to the volume. Items 192 to 235 are navy lists, official and unofficial…The rest of the first volume has more than 1200 entries for individual biographies, listed under the name of the person concerned. There are special sections for Nelson(more than 200 items) and Pepys (over 100). Some entries have a short note on the person concerned ..The detailed index of nearly 40 pages includes authors, persons written about, and names of ships.Volume 2 [= part 2 ]is a 'Reference index of maritime biography' to the contents of articles in 21 encyclopaedias, and other works of reference. This does not include entirely naval works such as O'Byrne. There are over 15,000 entries in this very useful list, and the names are not limited to sailors, but include merchants, scientists, cartographers and others having some connection with navigation, trade and maritime discoveries. Some of these names also have brief notes. Slight bubbling to front board of volume I , otherwise a Very Good set with the dustwrappers protected by plastic covers which have, however, tapemarks where the plastic was attached to the inside flaps; similarly there are tapemarks where the flap edges were attached to the pastedown endpapers.
