Gouverneur High School was incorporated in 1828 in St. Lawrence County, New York. Out of it grew Gouverneur Wesleyan Seminary, conducted by the Black River Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church. The schools' 1839 academic catalogue has separate sections for the high school and the seminary. "A sampling from the code of conduct: 5th. A gentlemanly and lady-like deportment is expected of the students at all times. 6th. All loud talking, or unnecessary noise of any KIND, within the building, in going to or in going in or returning from recitation, will be considered a breach of order. No student will leave the village to spend the Sabbath, or other time, with friends, without permission from one of the Teachers. 10th. No student will be allowed to spend time unnecessarily at the stores, taverns, or other places of public resort. 11th. No gentleman will be allowed to visit the rooms of females who are not under the immediate care of parents or friends, and no students will assemble for parties of pleasure, without permission from one of the Teachers. 12th. Students will not be expected to visit each other's rooms during study hours, without permission." Rare, OCLC recording one copy (PHA).
