About This Item

British Library, London, first edition, 2007. 3 vols, cloth, 4to,. xxi, 746 + 747-1522 + [1523]-2184 pp. From the introduction: "The Catalogue of Scandinavian Books provides a record of all the British Library's Scandinavian collections from the beginning of printing up to 1800. In addition to printed books in the main Humanities collections, it lists printed music, maps and atlases, and also Scandinavian books in the Oriental collections except for those that are wholly in an Eastern language. For the purpose of the present catalogue, Scandinavia is defined as the present-day countries of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden, but books in Scandinavian languages produced elsewhere are also included. Books produced in other territories formerly under Swedish or Danish control, e.g. Estonia, Swedish Pomerania or the present German state of Schleswig-Holstein, are excluded (unless written at least partly in a Scandinavian language, or bearing an imprint that includes the name of a place within the current boundaries of Scandinavia). The total number of records in the catalogue is 11,462. Over 400 of these are analytical entries for important texts - e.g. medieval chronicles, shorter sagas, lengthy periodical articles - that appear only as part of larger works. Therefore the number of independent works listed in the catalogue is just over 11,000.. The catalogue is divided into six sequences. The author-title catalogue contains full bibliographic descriptions, with further access being provided by the five indexes of: titles; printers, publishers and booksellers; places of publication; subjects, and provenance. The language of footnotes, subject headings, etc, is English. " The set comprises: Vol. 1 Author and Title Catalogue A-R; Vol. 2 Author and Title Catalogue R-Z, Title Index, Index of Printers and Publishers, Place Index of Printers and Publishers. Vol. 3 Subject Index and Provenance Index. As new.
