London: T. Woodward, J. Walthoe, J. Peele, T. Longman, T. Shewell, C. Hitch, A. Miller & J. Rivington, 1748. Fifth edition, corrected. Small octavo. Four volumes. Bound in full contemporary brown calf with a single blind-stamped border on the covers and blind-stamped tooling on board edges; spine with raised bands and a single gilt-lettered label; wood-engraved initials and headpieces. Large armorial bookplates of The Marquess of Sligo at Westport House, else fine.. A remarkably bright and well-preserved collection of the essays by Thomas Gordon (1691-1750) and John Trenchard (1662-1723) that, perhaps more than any other written work, influenced the minds of American colonists in the years leading up to the American Revolution. The 144 essays that are contained in the four volumes were originally published by Gordon and Trenchard in the London Journal between 1720 and 1723 under the pseudonym "Cato," the relentless opponent of Julius Caesar and committed champion of republican principles. This fifth edition collection was published in 1748 and was among the most popular edition read and circulated throughout pre-revolutionary America-and it was the fifth edition that was found in Thomas Jefferson's library. In addition to being a seminal work of the eighteenth-century Commonwealthmen-an outspoken movement of British reformers and advocates of republicanism-the publication and circulation of the letters among the Thirteen Colonies decisively influenced the American revolutionary movement. As the late historian Clinton Rossiter observed, it was the Cato essays, more than John Locke's Two Treatises of Government, that shaped the American revolutionary mind-a phenomenon reflected in the newspapers, pamphlets, and broadsides of pre-war America. For many colonists, the letters' emphasis on impartial liberty and the freedoms of speech, conscience, and property spoke to their ambitions as colonists; and the letters' strident opposition to government tyranny gave voice to their grievances against the Crown. Ultimately, the letters' call for liberty, accountability, and checks on authority would influence the American constitutional order that emerged after the Revolution. Cato's Letters represent a seminal work of revolutionary America, and their republican emphases continue to be advanced to this day. An uncommonly fine collection of this monumental work of American and British political thought.

Signed by Russell Kirk's wife, Annette Kirk, on front free endpaper: "With best wishes! / Annette Y. Kirk / August 1997." Fine in fine dust jacket.. A fine copy of Russell Kirk's (1918-1994) memoirs, signed by his wife, Annette Kirk, to whom he dedicated the book. Widely celebrated as a founding father of modern intellectual conservatism, Russell Kirk-the Sage of Mecosta-set out in The Sword of Imagination to describe his participation in the intellectual, social, philosophical, and political contests of the twentieth century. Kirk wrote the book in the third person in order to tell the story of a young boy coming of age in the railroad yards outside of Detroit and maturing into one of the most influential political minds of his generation. Perhaps best remembered for his movement-defining book The Conservative Mind (1953), throughout his life Kirk wielded… Read More

Boston: Printed at the Repertory Office, 1804. Pamphlet. Wraps, 9 x 6 inches, 15 pp. Contemporary, likely original, plain blue wrappers, sewn, untrimmed; text slightly browned with foxing throughout and some contemporary marginalia. Short inscription on head of front wrapper.. An uncommon first edition of A Sketch of the Character of Alexander Hamilton, attributed to the influential Massachusetts Federalist and famed orator Fisher Ames, in contemporary (and likely the original) plain blue wrappers, untrimmed and bound with original thread binding. Ames was widely recognized for his oratorical skills and fervent opposition to Jeffersonian democracy. Prior to the election of 1800, Ames urged Hamilton to align with the Federalists and nominate Aaron Burr for President over Thomas Jefferson. Despite Ames's pleas, Hamilton broke with the Federalists and supported Jefferson, which ultimately resulted in Jefferson's victory amidst the contentious Electoral College tie. After Hamilton's death in 1804… Read More

American Colonies, 1775. Original engraved boxwood block, 3 x 4 inches, three-quarters-inch deep, together with a uniformly framed modern impression. A few hair-line surface clefts and two larger clefts, one along the flag's edge and the other at flag center. Exceptionally rare and well-preserved Revolutionary War artifact depicting one of the most famous and enduring symbols and mottos of the colonial fight for independence.. Remarkable eighteenth-century engraved woodblock depicting an uncoiled rattlesnake against the thirteen-stripe flag emblazoned with the motto "Don't Tread on Me" set diagonally below. This original woodblock would have been used during the Revolutionary War to reproduce this defiant cartoon in colonial pamphlets, newspapers, and broadsides during the fight for independence. The cartoon's thirteen stripes represented the thirteen colonies, and the threatening serpent posed a striking warning to those who would dare tread upon their freedom. The rattlesnake was a well-known… Read More

Exceptional first printing of Burnham's groundbreaking work in an uncommonly bright dust jacket. Fine in a very good-plus dust jacket.. James Burnham's (1905-1987) seminal work in which he argues that capitalism will be displaced by a form of global managerialism and, as a result, bureaucratic elites will supplant workers and capitalists at the apex of power. Prior to publishing The Managerial Revolution Burnham was a prominent Trotskyist, but he would resign from the Workers Party in 1940 and thereafter become an influential theorist in the post-war American conservative movement. New York: The John Day Company, 1954. First edition. Octavo. Original blue cloth and dust jacket (not price-clipped). Minor wear to dust jacket, else fine.. First edition of James Burnham's (1905-1987) classic review of what various investigating committees had discovered regarding the infiltration of the US government by communist espionage networks. Published on the heels of Whittaker Chambers' Witness (1952)-which recounted Chambers' years as a domestic Soviet spy, his subsequent defection from communism, and his testimony before the House Un-American Activities Committee in the late 1940s-Burnham's The Web of Subversion lucidly narrates the surprising facts and conclusions drawn from the many congressional probes into communist espionage cells, methods, and activities in the US. In a manner reminiscent of his journalistic counterpart, the intrepid John T. Flynn, Burnham set himself the task of distilling from the mountains of investigative materials a clear and coherent accounting of communism's… Read More

First edition of Edmund Burke's (1729-1797) enduring polemic against the French Revolution and defense of conservative principles. The publication of Burke's pamphlet in 1790 would prove a watershed moment in the birth and development of modern conservatism, as Reflections has been credited as among the first-and finest-transformative statements of traditionalism into a fully conceived political philosophy. Burke was an Irish statesman who served in the House of Commons… Read More
