San Marino, California: Huntington Library, 1951. Hardcover. Near Fine/Good Plus. SECOND EDITION. Previous owner's ex-libris bookplate to front pastedown endpaper. Dustjacket good plus. Sunning to spine and folds of lightly-soiled mint-green jacket showing original price of $5.00. Edgewear includes small tears and chips. Gilt lettering debossed to spine of cranberry-red, cloth-covered boards. Twenty black and white illustrations. 365 pp with extensive appendices and notes, including corrections and additions, bibliography, index. An economic and social history of the southern California of those half-forgotten, formative years. This study is chiefly confined to the period between the Gold Rush of 1849 --51 and the completion of the Pacific Railroad, some two decades later. The author has added a newspaper account of the noted bandit, Tiburcio Vasquez and additional illustrations.
