About This Item
Houghton Mifflin Company, New York, 1973. First Edition. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Very Good Condition/Very Good. Illustrator: Various. 1.1 kg; 320 pages, index, genealogical charts, concise bibliography. The text is illustrated in both colour and black-and-white, using photographs, reproductions of paintings, and of documents. Colour illustrated dust jacket. The book has been read, and there are signs of this, but nevertheless it is in veyy good order. Top edge of text block tinted a dark red. This unique history, written by a distinguished member of the family it portrays, vividly recreate lives that were lived and events that took place in one of England's greatest houses. The book is divided into three parts. The first part paints portraits, and at once more intimate and more colourful than most historians give, and it also sketches in such brilliant personages as Essex and rally and the odd, unwittingly figure of James I. In the second part the author traces the story of a family during the late 17th and the 18th century, when, though less outstanding politically, it was ornamented by picturesque characters. The third and most striking part deals with the late the Tory and and the Edwardian periods, when the Cecils rose to eminence again under the third Marquess. This section, based on material drawn from the memories of the author himself and his close relatives, has the glow of personal reminiscence rather than the reflected light of history. -- from the front fold over Size: Quarto -- up to 12 " Tall.
