Twelvemo, 198pp. Publisher's brown cloth, title stamped in gilt on spine, frog stamped in gilt on front cover and blind stamped on rear cover. Faint dampstain to top quarter of front cover, no impact to text block. Fraying to head of spine. Front hinge and front free endpaper reinforced with archival repair. Advertisement on verso of dedication page. Solid text block. (McBride 4) (BAL 3310) A scarce example of Twain's first published book. The first edition of The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County, and Other Sketches was printed in 1867 by Charles Henry Webb. It was Mark Twain's first book, being a collection of 27 short stories, originally published in magazines and newspapers.
