About This Item

New York, NY: Blandford, 1993. Fifth printing [stated]. Trade paperback. Very good. Angus McBride. 144 pages. Includes Preface, The Golden Age, The Battle for Britain, The Northern Menace, Celtic Counter-Attack; The Final Challenge; Bibliography; and Index. Profusely illustrated in color and black and white. Tim Newark is the author of several critically acclaimed military history books, including Highlander, The Fighting Irish, The Mafia at War, and Camouflage, which accompanied the Imperial War Museum exhibition. He was the editor of Military Illustrated for 17 years and has written seven TV military history documentary series, including Hitler's Bodyguards. In 1985, The Barbarians was published by Blandford. With illustrations by Angus McBride, this popular history of the fall of Rome became a bestseller, going through seven reprints in two years. The sequel in 1986, Celtic Warriors, was also a best-seller and was followed by Medieval Warlords and Women Warlords. Angus McBride (11 May 1931 - 15 May 2007) was an English historical illustrator. In 1975, he began to work with Osprey Publishing's Men-at-Arms series. He continued to do realistic, historical illustrations for Osprey Publishing as well as other such work for other military-history publishers (Concord publications, etc.) This book tells the heroic story of two thousand years of Celtic warfare. From four centuries before Christ to the sixteenth century, it describes the dramatic, hard-fought withdrawal before succeeding military powers and the times when the Celts struck back. It celebrates the persistent struggle of the Celtic-speakiing people to retain their independence and their way of life.
