Cemetery Inscriptions of the Town of Barnstable, Massachusetts, and its Villages, 1600-1900, with Corrections and Additions

This revised collection of thirty-three cemeteries is an alphabetical arrangement of inscriptions found on tombstones and in records. These cemeteries are found in Barnstable, West Barnstable, Cotuit, Marstons Mills, Centerville, Hyannis, Hyannisport, Cummaquid and Oesterville, Massachusetts. The inscriptions include the name of the deceased and, when available, the year of death and/or birth and the names of spouses and children. Additional commentary identifies such items as: who the deceased is buried next to or the family plot in which he or she was buried; the condition of the tombstone as a result of weather, time or vandalism; and stones that were difficult to read. Supplementary information provided by the compiler includes: military involvement of the deceased, epitaphs, status (widow, infant, doctor, etc.), religious affiliation, and age at death. A key is provided to help identify each person with the cemetery in which he or she was buried. Several photographs of some of the more unique stones are included. This revised edition provides information on ten more cemeteries than the original, including many records that were discovered in the cellar vault of the Sturgis Library and material available at the time of the original publication but inadvertently omitted. .
