About This Item

Melbourne; John Ferres, Government Printer; 1855-1858.. First Editions; F'cap Folio; pp. 110,18, 7, 34, 211, 259; texts with numerous tables, indexes, bound in their original sewn printed wrappers, one wrapper discoloured otherwise very good copies. These are reports from the first two census taken in the colony, at the time of the first census 236,798 people lived in the colony ( unfortunately Aboriginal people were not officially included in this census, only some aboriginals who were "permanently settled" were counted) The largest community were English-born, with 97,943 people, followed by the Irish and Scottish communities. These years marks a pivotal point in Victoria's history. Victoria had only been separated from New South Wales for three years, and the gold rushes saw thousands of prospectors arriving. Major Melbourne institutions were being founded, University of Melbourne, State Library, Museum of Victoria and the first train ran from South Melbourne (Sandridge) to Flinders Street.
