Very Good/Issued Without d/j. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 5 vol. set, appr. 2,643 pp., each vol. has a frontis, maps, b/w illus., footnotes, bib., & index. Additionally in some vols. are tables & appendices, & vol. I has a color fold-out map of Illinois (w/a tear in it). Vol. I: THE ILLINOIS COUNTRY, 1673-1818; Vol. II:THE FRONTIER STATE, 1818-1848; Vol. III: THE ERA OF THE CIVIL WAR, 1848-1870; Vol. IV: THE INDUSTRIAL STATE, 1870-1893; Vol. V: THE MODERN COMMONWEALTH, 1893-1918. The books have different authors. This set belonged to & carries the signature of Margaret C. Norton on the f.f.e.p. of every vol. Norton (1891-1984) was the first state archivist for Illinois & co-founder & one time pres. of the Society of American Archivists. Each vol. is clothbound w/gold-foil stamping to the front cover & spine. There is occasional lt. wear to corners & head & heel of the spine, some very lt. spotting on vol. IV. Overall v.g. cond.
