About This Item
Paris: Guillaumin, 1860. Octavo. 372 pages. John Stuart Mill recognized Dupont-White's view that the advance in civilization brought about an increase in state activity which was an index to continued progress. As opposed to pure laissez-faire, this was a remarkable progressive view. Although the Catholic Church's control over the state had diminished since the French Revolution, his view of Gallicanism was for further freedom for the state over religion. A very nice copy bound in 3/4 brown morocco over marbled paper covered baords, raised bands with compartments lettered and decorated in gilt, all edges and endpapers marbled, Small label to rear pastedown.
