About This Item
New York: Century Co., 1889 Book. Illus. by Black and White Line Drawings. Very Good Minus. Hardcover. 1st Edition. Folio - over 12 - 15" tall. Original decorative beige cloth over boards with brown lettering with reinforcement at spine (possibly added by original owners, the Saint John Law Society, whose name is printed at the bottom of each spine). Leather(?) labels with contents of each volume printed on spine. Most volumes have minor handsoiling to the covers. All volumes have been reinforced inside front and back covers with bookbinding tape, but despite that, most have breaks in the hinge within the first few pages. This has resulted in about ten of the 7046+ pages being separated (all are present). Some of the pages are uncut, and there is some damage to a few due to careless attempts at opening them. This set has been used, and there are edge tears and folded down corners throughout. A handful of tears go across the full width of the page, but all the information is still there. Someone has done mathematical calculations in pencil in the front of a couple of parts. The Century Dictionary was published in 24 parts and sold by subscription from 1889-91. It is widely regarded as one of the greatest dictionaries of American English ever produced, having more than 200,000 main entries and 500,000 definitions. Complete sets of the 24 parts are hard to find. These books are on consignment, so no discounts apply. It is large and heavy (each part averages 1.5 kg.) - expect a request for "extra shipping" to cover both shipping and insurance..
