[4], v-xx, 1-298 pp. Blue publisher's cloth with a gold border and gold lettering on the front board, rubbed lettering on the spine. Illustrated with a frontispiece and with five plates of black and white photographs. Foreword by H.R.H., The Prince of Wales (at the time the President of the R.S.P.C.A.), introduction by Lord Lambourne, with an ode, "Compassion" by Thomas Hardy. A history of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, an early catalyst for the humane treatment of animals. Fraying to the spine ends and corners, a bookplate on the front pastedown, foxing to the half-title.
