Adding greatly to our understanding of Cezanne's development as a painter are the 270 illustrations, many of unfamiliar works here published in color for the first time. The fact that the work was originally published 50 years ago as Rewald's doctoral thesis does not diminish its value, as the author has revised and expanded it and updated the bibliography.
