Very Good. hardback. 1st Edition. hardback, octavo, first edition in book form, the work having previously appeared in parts in the periodical 'The Quarterly Review', handsomely bound in red half morocco, faded to brown on spine. Ruled gilt to boards, red cloth sides, raised bands to spine, compartments blocked with gilt windmill or horse head vignettes, top edge gilt, remaining edges rough trimmed. All thirteen plates are fully hand coloured, and more unusually so is the engraved tissue guarded portrait, some foxing to the portrait and to the margins of the title page but far less than that which is usually observed in this work, xx, 301, [ii] 4, 4, 8 . Portrait by D Maclise, plates by Henry Alken..
