Dark blue leather over boards 8x11", gold titles, white and gold circular seal "Excelsior" on cover chipped where cover blemished by 1.5x1" stain. Minor foxing, aging, a few small spots on cover; map/illustrations.... 0 534 p. Includes: illustrations, maps, index. Explorer Samuel Champlain of the French Territories, in 1609, was the first white man to set foot on soil in what is now northeastern New York State. In 1909, that discovery was celebrated. Ten pages offer an historical perspective, the bulk of the book is about the celebration and the individuals central to the event. "Libretto of the Play of Hiawatha" follows; also Geology, historical episodes, travelers' remarks about Champlain Valley (New York State and Vermont).

"With the Compliments of Yale University Library" tipped-in sheet, and a Free Public Library of New Haven, Conn bookplate on the inside of the front cover, along with "Withdrawn" stamps. There are upper corner waterstains from the title page to page 46, not affecting the text or photos. this is a large, heavy [6 lbs] 4to, 534pp, with foldouts of Fort Ticonderoga and a two-color historical map of the Champlain Valley. VG+.
