Boston: Lee And Shepard, 1868. [First Edition]. Hardcover. Good Condition. 12mo., pp. 282, brick red cloth covers, gilt decorated spine with baseball bat & ball, Illustrated with frontispiece and three plates. -- Front and rear cloth covers have some bubbles, front hinge cracked (still holding). Title page, and frontispiece tissue guard loose. Spine moderately rubbed and frayed at top and bottom, corners bumped. binding (text block) tight. Some light diagonal moisture stains to bottom front corners of the text (see last photo) -- Title page date 1868 mirrors date on the copyright page. -- Overall. "CHANGING BASE.... is the second novel to feature a large amount of baseball and the first to feature the game both in its title as well as in its binding decoration (bat and ball on spine). One of the illustrations, "Rice makes his Base" (opposite page 165) features a baseball game in progress, specifically a runner hugging a base, cap in the dirt beside him, baseman holding the ball that clearly arrived too late for the tag"-freemansauction.
