London: Printed by E. Couchman, 1848. Pp. 44, original tan wrappers reprinting the title page with exception of the imprint to the front cover. Slight chipping to upper outer corner with a light embossed square, otherwise fine copy in custom black cloth slipcase with inserted chemise folder. TPL 7986; Peel 228. Not in Casey, Gagnon, Lande, Sabin, Amtmann, Eberstadt, Soliday or Streeter. In this charge to the jury at the commencement of the trial of an Indian for murder, Thom incorrectly declared that the rights of the Hudson's Bay Company, by its charter, extended to judicial authority over the aborigines. Thom was here exceeding his authority as the case should have been tried in Upper Canada. Adam Thom represented a unique link between Lower Canada and Ruperts Land in that his unyielding racial attitudes earned him the enmity of French Canadians and Métis alike.. Soft Cover in Slipcase. Fine. Octavo. Pamphlet.
