About This Item
London: Goupil & Co.,, 1898. First edition, finely bound by Zaehnsdorf. This work, published posthumously, is a beautifully illustrated biography of Charles I which follows the story of his life with numerous finely printed portraits and facsimile documents. A lawyer by training, Sir John Skelton (1831-1897) gained fame as a writer thanks a series of successful biographical works on Mary Queen of Scots, in which he "characteristically displayed something of the spirit of the advocate" (ODNB). He also contributed to Fraser's Magazine under the pseudonym of Shirley - a name inspired by Charlotte Bronte's novel - and to Blackwood's Magazine. Quarto (320 x 250 mm). Bound by Zaehnsdorf in contemporary half green morocco, spine with raised bands lettered in gilt, marbled boards and endpapers, top edge gilt, fore and bottom edges uncut. Colour portrait frontispiece, 41 engraved plates with captioned tissue guards, title page printed in red and black. Early 20th-century bookplate of one Gertrude Rennie Manderson and her ownership inscription to second blank. Spine faded, edges rubbed, touch of wear to corners, sporadic foxing, closed tear to fore edge of p. 56, not affecting text. A very good copy.
