Alfred A. Knopf. New York. 1960. Fine First Edition (stated), burgundy boards with bright gilt seal on front, gilt lettering on spine and classic Borzoi (Russian wolfhound) logo on back board. Both topstain and pages not overly faded or age-toned. Unclipped ($6.75) jacket shows shelf wear with several small chips on top and one on the bottom of front. Jacket is protected with removable mylar cover. Inscribed on flyleaf by the Pulitzer Prize winning author. Charles Sumner was one of the founders of the Republican party and vocal antislavery spokesman in the Senate in the 1850's. The book covers the career of Senator Sumner up to the firing on Fort Sumter in Charleston, South Caroling. Recall, this battle was a loss for the US Army and was the beginning of the American Civil War. 9.5 x 6.5 in. 392 pg. with 24 pg. Index.
