About This Item

New York, N.Y.: Random House, January 1978. Cloth . Very Good/No Jacket As Issued. Octavo. Navy blue cloth covered boards with fading silver lettering along the spine and silver illustration of tall grasses likewise faded at blade tips. Some tiny scattered white spots scattered lightly across boards. Random House colophon stamped in red bottom textblock edge. Nice maps in black on green & white front and rear end pages. Front: map of The Choptank area. Rear: map of The Chesapeake Bay Region. Stated, 'First Edition' with this number line: 2 4 6 8 9 7 5 3. I assume this means this is a 2nd printing, but I am not certain because RH has changed how it applies the number string. In maroon paper wrapped slipcase of heavy cardstock. Horizontal wrap-around plate with Presentation Copy printed on spine side, geese in flight over sunrise over Atlantic ocean rear panel. What I assume to be Michener facsimile signature on front panel. [865 pp.]

Synopsis

James A. Michener was one of the world’s most popular writers, the author of more than forty books of fiction and nonfiction, including the Pulitzer Prize–winning Tales of the South Pacific, the bestselling novels The Source, Hawaii, Alaska, Chesapeake, Centennial, Texas, Caribbean, and Caravans, and the memoir The World Is My Home . Michener served on the advisory council to NASA and the International Broadcast Board, which oversees the Voice of America. Among dozens of awards and honors, he received America’s highest civilian award, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, in 1977, and an award from the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities in 1983 for his commitment to art in America. Michener died in 1997 at the age of ninety.
