Garden City, NY: Doubleday & Company, Inc, 1951. First Edition. First Printing, one of 5,000 copies. Octavo (19.25cm); grey paper-covered boards and black cloth backstrip, with titles stamped in silver on spine; grey topstain; dustjacket; [ii],[13],14-92,[2]pp. Signed by the author on the front endpaper. Small triangular spot of faint discoloration to upper front cover, else very Near Fine. Dustjacket is unclipped (priced $1.50), showing modest wear and dust-soil, some gentle sunning to front panel, with a handful of small losses, tears, and attendant creases to extremities; Very Good. Algren's ode to his beloved Chicago, "a giant panoramic painting of a tumultuous city in all its vivid colors, a prose picture by an artist-writer forever enamored with his favorite model" (from front flap). A version of this was published under the title "One Man's Chicago" in Holiday magazine (October, 1951). BRUCCOLI A5.1.a.
