About This Item
Porter & Coates, Philadelphia, n.d. (between 1867-1895). Acceptable. 646 p., clean and unmarked except for name of former owner on front end paper; paper age-toned but strong; very fine engravings by F.O.C. Darley; frontis. has tissue guard; green boards with carved bird and floral ornamentation, slightly rubbed and bumped; clear gilt writing; badly damaged spine. Rebinding with the same boards would make this a beautiful book. It is a 19th c. reprint of a late 18th c. best-seller mentioned in Jane Austen's Emma, and the type of romance satirized in Northanger Abbey. It's actually an entertaining if preposterous yarn, with an over-the-top villain who has cheated a brother and sister of their inheritance, lovers who are repeatedly separated, perpetual peril, characters with names like "Lord Mortimer" and "Lady Euphrasia." Who could resist?
